Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A handmade ceramic stoneware lamp by Hadiya Williams. The cylindrical base is made from glazed stoneware primarily in a blue and white checkerboard pattern. At both the top and bottom of the body is a strip of brown with thin black stripes. There is a round hole in the back near the bottom for the brown and black braided cord. Near the cord, there is a small notch in the brown glaze where there are two small, stacked yellow blocks with rounded edges. The cylindrical white shade is made from handmade, white recycled paper. Vertical line segments have been created on the surface with micron pigment pen and a large piece of black felt in an abstract ‘U’ shape is adhered at the front center. Brass wires extend inward from the shade to a black metal lamp harp, which has a round, flat, blue and white ceramic finial at the top.
