Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

Black-and-white silver gelatin photographic print of jeweler Art Smith holding one of his jewelry designs, an Ellington necklace. Taken outside near the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts during the 1974 annual summer session, Smith is sitting on a rock, with greenery behind him. He wears a dark color jacket, dark jeans, and wire framed glasses. With both his hands, he holds his necklace on his lap. The necklace, named after Ruth Ellington, sister of jazz musician Duke Ellington, is comprised of three flat, abstract shaped elements, each with three bezel set stones. There are no inscriptions on the front or back of the photograph.
