Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

An acrylic painting with relief printing, fabric, and charcoal elements created by Delita Martin. The work is a portrait of a woman against a light brown background, with red gingko leaves around and in front of her. The woman, who has short cropped hair and small hoop earrings, is depicted from the chest up. She wears a top with a swirling pattern in black, grey, and red. The edges of the garment are hand-stitched with bright red thread. She gazes directly at the viewer, her eyes bright through a red gingko leaf that partially obscures her face like a mask.
