Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

"This image is Sapelo Island, described as a "time capsule adrift on the Atlantic." It encapsulates centuries of Gullah Geechee culture, preserving a rich heritage. As a child whose parents are from South Georgia and who had an Uncle who practiced his MD in Brunswick and became the healer for the Gullah Geeche. I yearn to connect with my ancestors/parents, where I have no sense of direct belonging." - Sheila Pree Bright A black-and-white photograph of the shoreline of Sapelo Island, Georgia. The left side of the photograph depicts the rocky grass covered shoreline with a flat, calm expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on the right. Additional islands are visible in the background and a bright, cloud-filled sky is above. The back of the photograph is blank.
