Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

This is a mixed media portrait of a man with a pigeon emerging from the top of his head, framed within a red frame in the shape of a birdcage. The graphite portrait shows the man from the neck up. He is in profile, and his gaze is slightly upwards towards his forehead. He has a slight mustache and a beard confined to his chin. The pigeon emerging from his head is shown from the neck up is also in profile, facing in the same direction as the man. It emerges slightly towards the back of the man’s head. A thin red line is used to create a domed “cage” around the portrait head. There is a horizontal sequence of thicker red lines in a crisscrossing pattern directly below the head to create the bottom of the birdcage. At the top of the dome is a round red finial.
