Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A pair of kinetic earrings designed by Art Smith. Each earring is constructed from three pieces of brass: a flat brass pendant at the top from which hang two semi-circles of brass wire. Each wire semi-circle has an elongated, thin, flat piece of brass soldered to each end. The flat pieces are bone-shaped, rounded at both ends and tapering inwards on both sides towards the middle. For each earring, one semi-circle piece is wider than the other, allowing the other, narrower one to nest inside, creating an overall mobile effect. Each pair of wire pieces is threaded through a hole at the base of the top pendant. The pendant has a silver French hook wire soldered to the back. The artist’s signature hallmark, [Art Smith], is stamped on the back of one earring (b).
