Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A World War I era bronze circular souvenir medal attached to a red ribbon with a horizontal bronze piece attached. The bronze horizontal attachement holds an image of a bald eagle with its wings outstretched and seven stars above the left wing and six stars above the right wing. The medal is missing its pinback that would allow it to be affixed to a uniform. The front of the medal contains imagery of a bald eagle with its wings outstreched at the top with sunrays filling the background and profile portrait of a soldier in uniform holding a bayonnet on the right side with the words "OUR COLORED TROOPS" written inside of an unfurled banner on the left side. The back of the medal contains the "WORLD WAR BEGAN / AUGUST 1, 1914 / US entered APRIL 6, 1917 / ARMISTICE SIGNED NOV. 11, 1918 / PEACE SIGNED JUNE 28, 1919" engraved in it.
