Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A white and navy plastic raffia hat with an asymmetrical brim. The body of the hat is constructed of woven white and navy plastic raffia. The white raffia differs from the navy as it has the addition of white boucle thread sewn on both sides. The hat is made of two pieces of the woven raffia, one for the crown and another for the brim. The woven raffia is reversable and both sides are used on the exterior. The weave on the crown uses the side of the weave that has more white while the brim of the hat uses the reverse side that has more navy. The top of the crown is flat and lightly rounded at the edges. A navy petersham rayon ribbon hatband is adhered to the base of the crown. A bow made of the same petersham ribbon is adhered to the center back of the hatband.
