A beret with three layers of pleats in a pale apricot shade of wool. Two decorative wool snaps with rhinestones connect the top and bottom pleated layers at the front of the hat. The interior of the hat is unlined. An orange Petersham ribbon is stitched along the length of the interior crown. A gold fabric tag stitched over the Petersham ribbon at the center back seam reads [Woodward & Lothrop, Washington]. To the right of the label tag is a smaller fabric tag that reads [22] in a small, black, rounded rectangle. A label is branded into the interior of the hat that reads [Made in illegible. Merrimac Hat Corp. Bottom line of text is illegible.] This project received Federal support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative Pool, administered by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum.
