Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A black quilted jacket with gold applique by Jay Smith. The jacket is quilted and stuffed with a layer of batting. It features a high, rounded neckline and is composed of four panels of black velveteen – two for the front, which are joined via princess seams to two side panels. The princess seams are covered in black bias tape. Each set-in sleeve is made from two panels of fabric seamed at the inner and outer arm, and the armscye is lined with black bias tape. There is an allover starburst pattern, starting from the bottom, interior corners of the front opening made from braided cord that has been wrapped in gold metallic thread and machine stitched into place. Each sleeve has the same pattern but the rays from the starburst radiate from the innermost side of the sleeve cuff. At each cuff is a 1.5” vent which is also edged with black twill tape.
