Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

A green feather hat with net. The base of the hat is composed of buckram, covered in maroon velveteen fabric. Chartreuse feathers completely cover the hat base and are glued into place. A layer of light green nylon net has been applied over top the feathers and sewn in place along the underside of the brim, presumably to keep the feathers from shedding. The net is broken in various places. There is a front decoration made of darker green feathers that curve upwards at the center front and there are two bundled feather decorations, made from chartreuse and red feathers, glued into place at the front proper left and right. At the underside of the brim is a panel of maroon velveteen, that’s roughly 2” wide at the widest point and there’s metal wire encased along the brim’s edge.
