Source catalog description

This description refers to material held by Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Visual details below describe the original material.

An orange velvet turban hat. The base of the hat is made from a layer of stiffened buckram that’s been blocked to shape. It has multiple pieces of orange pleated velveteen that’s been wrapped around it and hand tacked into place in several places to mimic a turban. The front of the hat is denoted by crisscrossed orange panels. A black synthetic Petersham ribbon is hand sewn to the interior crown’s edge and one panel of black synthetic plain weave fabric lines the inside of the hat. It’s been gathered and hand sewn to the hat along the edges. The reverse side of the orange velvet is dark red cotton velveteen fabric. There is no label.
